What trends were found at the world's premier event for the packaging sector?

This year at the Interpack Processing and Packaging fair in Dusseldorf, Germany , we saw lots of growth in already popular single-serving products: coffee pods, single-portion nut packs, ice creams and more. We have seen this trend in fresh products as well, including the growing demand for tomatoes and berries in small shaker cups. While much of this trend is related to convenience, Interpack showed another side of the story.  The individually sized portions are also designed to avoid the food waste that comes from buying larger quantities, or cooking at home. Precooked meals, for example, not only save time cooking and cleaning, but also eliminate odd leftovers and extra ingredients that could easily go to waste.

On the production side, packagers are looking, now more than ever, for their equipment to do more. As new trends emerge, such as more convenient and individual packaging, producers are being asked for more variety.  New versatile packaging machines are in demand, cutting costs and saving time for producers packaging in different formats.

There was also lots of discussion about “smart packaging”, and the variety of ways it can be employed. From logistics uses to branding, developers and designers are including technology in packaging, adding value to different parts of the product´s lifespan. Traceability, quality, and communicating information to the consumer are some major points of interest.
